Copley Medal

The earliest and most distinguished of the awards made by the *Royal Society. Sir Godfrey Copley, an MP and member of the society, bequeathed £100 in 1709 to go towards experiments or any other purpose. The medal was established in 1731 and is awarded annually to honour distinguished scientific research.
