Richard Burbage

(c.1567–1619) The actor most associated with *Shakespeare. He was the son of London's first professional theatre manager, James Burbage (c.1531–97), whose original theatre was rebuilt as the *Globe. In 1594 he became the leading actor of the newly formed *Chamberlain's Men, the company of which Shakespeare was a member, and as such he created the roles of Richard III, Romeo, Henry V, Hamlet, Macbeth, Othello and Lear.
