(196,000 in 1981) City and seaport on the northeast coast of England, at the mouth of the river Wear. It expanded greatly in the 17–18C, first as the port from which coal mined in the Wear valley was distributed and then as a shipbuilding centre. Glass and pottery became important products at the same period, both making much use of a famous local image, the iron bridge over the Wear which was opened in 1796. The Sunderland Museum and Art Gallery, established in 1846, has a fine collection of these wares. Sunderland was given the status of a city in 1992.
