One of the most self-confident of Victorian hymns, though its tone is largely explained by its origin. It was written in 1864 by Sabine Baring-Gould (1834–1924), to be sung by children carrying banners in a traditional Whit Monday procession in the parish where he was curate. He used a tune from Haydn. The one to which the hymn is now sung was composed for it by Arthur *Sullivan in 1871.
