St Mungo
|
|
(d. c.612) The traditional founder of *Glasgow, though little is known of him except from very late sources. These state that his real name was Kentigern (Mungo being said to be a nickname meaning 'dear friend'); that he established a Christian settlement in Glasgow; and that he spent a period also in Wales when the local ruler in Scotland reverted to paganism. The ring and the fish in Glasgow's coat of arms are details from one of the miracles described in his legend. His feast day is January 14.
