Thomas Malthus
|
|
(1766–1834) Author of An Essay on the Principle of Population as it Affects the Future Improvement of Society (1798), in which he argued that poverty is inescapable because the population (increasing geometrically) grows faster than production (increasing arithmetically); population growth is therefore only kept in check by famine, war and disease. This economic pessimism was for many a welcome argument against the promptings of charity, but it did inspire the evolutionary theories of both *Wallace and *Darwin.
