Compilation of the largest, smallest, highest, lowest, most or least in every conceivable field. The first edition was commissioned by the managing director of *Guinness and appeared in 1955, edited by the twins Norris and Ross McWhirter (b. 1925; Ross was shot by IRA terrorists in 1975). Since 1960 it has been published annually and in 1974 it earned its own place in the records, becoming the top-selling copyright book in the world. By the 1990s the aggregate global sales were around 70 million in nearly 40 languages.
