Gateshead
|
|
(83,000 in 1991) Industrial town on the south bank of the river Tyne, historically overshadowed by its larger rival to the immediate north, *Newcastle-upon-Tyne. Gateshead has excellent paintings in the Shipley Art Gallery, based on the collection of a Newcastle solicitor, Joseph Shipley (1822–1909). It also has the Gateshead International Stadium, opened in 1955 and gradually developed since then to become a major national location for athletics events and for large open-air pop concerts. The Metro Centre was Britain's largest shopping centre when it opened in 1985.
