English National Opera

(ENO) London-based company which has performed opera in English since 1931, first at *Sadler's Wells and since 1968 at the *Coliseum. Founded by Lilian *Baylis as the Vic-Wells Opera, the name was soon changed to Sadler's Wells Opera and then, in 1974, to English National Opera. In 1978 the company established an offshoot in Leeds, which became *Opera North.
