The source of continuous friction throughout the 19C, as the European powers jockeyed to benefit from the crumbling of the *Ottoman empire. At the start of the century this stretched from Greece all the way round the Mediterranean to Egypt. Britain's most active involvement in the resulting conflicts was in the *Crimean War, but it continued with the *jingoism of the 1870s.
