Claridge's

|
(London W1) One of London's most famous hotels. Originally established in 1812, it was known until the mid-19C by the name of James Mivart, its manager. He incorporated a succession of adjacent houses on the present Brook Street site, and when he retired in the 1850s the enterprise was taken over by William and Marianne Claridge – who had previously been running another small adjacent hotel. The present building dates from 1894–8.
