The outstanding architectural feature of *Edinburgh's New Town, designed in 1791 by Robert *Adam and built (with certain modifications) in 1792–1807. The north side of the square is entirely his. The central house, no. 6, is the official residence of the secretary of state for Scotland. No. 7, the 'Georgian House', is furnished and on display as an example of a rich Edinburgh residence in the late 18C.
