Broadwood
|
|
Firm of piano makers, founded in 1728 and still in existence, which manufactured grand pianos from 1781. They came to be considered the best in Europe and Thomas Broadwood, meeting Beethoven in 1817 in Vienna, promised to send him one; it took six months on its journey from London, by sea to Trieste and then north by cart to Austria. Beethoven is believed to have hammered away at it throughout his remaining years. It is now in the National Museum in Budapest, presented by Liszt.
