Bognor Regis
|
|
(56,500 in 1991) Seaside resort in West Sussex. Regis (Latin for 'of the king') was added to the name after George V had convalesced in 1929 at the nearby Craigweil House, which has since been demolished. An early and persistent rumour links Bognor with the king's dying words. The story goes that a doctor whispered to him on his deathbed 'Cheer up, Your Majesty, you will soon be at Bognor again' and got the curt reply 'Bugger Bognor'. The official version of his last words, reported in The Times, was 'How is the Empire?' – a question which he had certainly asked that morning, when receiving a group of Privy Councillors.
