Bevis Marks Synagogue
|
|
(London EC3) The oldest surviving synagogue in Britain, built in 1701 for Spanish and Portuguese Sephardic Jews. It retains its original interior, with much carved woodwork and with galleries supported on columns in a style very similar to Wren's contemporary London churches. It sounds to modern ears as though it commemorates a Jewish benefactor, but Bevis Marks has been since medieval times the name of an adjacent street.
