Joseph Addison
|
|
(1672–1719) Essayist whose easy conversational prose and instinct for subjects of serious but general interest contributed largely to the success of the *Tatler and the *Spectator. He was also author of a tragedy, Cato (1713), much admired in its time. His deistic ode to creation, The spacious firmament on high (based on Psalm 19 and published in the Spectator), has survived as a rousing hymn.
