Acton Burnell
|
|
(13km/8m S of Shrewsbury) Village which takes its name from Robert Burnell, chancellor to Edward I. The red sandstone 'castle', which he started to build in 1284, was more of an elegant manor house. It was lived in for little more than a century and never altered; although now a ruin, it suggests well the domestic arrangements of a 13C grandee. Burnell also built the village church, in the *Early English style, which is notable for one of the finest memorial *brasses in England, commemorating Sir William Burnell (d. 1382).
