(48,000 in 1991) Seaport and resort on the west coast of Scotland, in the Strathclyde region. Its history goes back to the Middle Ages, but it is best known now for its links with Robert *Burns, born in the nearby village of *Alloway and baptized in Ayr's Auld Kirk (old church). The old and new bridges which argue with each other in his poem Twa Brigs still span the river Ayr side by side, and an alehouse, believed to be the building in which *Tam o' Shanter begins his wild night of adventure, is now a museum in the poet's memory.
