Audley End
|
|
(24km/15m S of Cambridge) Huge Jacobean mansion, even though much reduced from its size when first built (1605–14). In the 18C the interior was altered by *Vanbrugh and subsequently remodelled by Robert *Adam, and the park was landscaped by Capability *Brown. It stands on the foundations of a Benedictine abbey, and its name derives from Sir Thomas Audley (1488–1544), lord chancellor to Henry VIII, who was granted the abbey on the *dissolution of the monasteries in 1538.
