Astronomer Royal
|
|
Office dating from 1675, when Charles II appointed John *Flamsteed to set up the *Royal Observatory, responsibility for which remained with the astronomer royal until 1971. Edmund *Halley succeeded Flamsteed in 1720. The position is now largely honorary, but the astronomer royal for Scotland still has responsibility for the Royal Observatory in Edinburgh.
