(Francis William Aston, 1877–1945) English physicist and chemist, who by his development of the mass spectrograph at the *Cavendish Laboratory in 1919 was able to show that stable elements of low atomic weight contain mixed isotopes. Aston eventually identified 212 of the 287 naturally occurring isotopes. His apparatus is now in the *Science Museum in London. In 1922 he was awarded the Nobel prize for chemistry.
