Ascot

|
(11km/7m S of Windsor) Racecourse famous in particular for its summer meeting, held for four days in June and known as Royal Ascot; the link with royalty goes back to 1711, when a race meeting here was founded by Queen Anne. Ascot remains a firm fixture in the royal family's calendar. Known for its display of fashion (with a minority tradition of outrageous hats), the meeting's most famous race is the Gold Cup (4-year-olds and upwards, run since 1807). But Ascot's biggest race, in terms of prize money and prestige, is run at the July meeting. It is the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Diamond Stakes (for 3-year-olds and upwards), founded in 1951 to mark the *Festival of Britain.
